Assistive Technology Guide - Personal Alarm Call Systems (PACS) Telephone Based
A PACS is a telephone based personal alarm that allows a person to call for assistance when they are unable to access a telephone. It works by pressing a button on a pendant worn around the neck or on a wristlet, or directly via the alarm unit, or indirectly via a sensor, which activates a unit connected to the telephone line. A call is automatically sent to a designated contact, help is then sent to the person in distress. PACS can operate in a variety of settings - private homes, retirement villages and health facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes.
